How Clean Is Planet Fitness? One Member's Perspective on Why Cleanliness Matters

One of the things I appreciate most about working out at Planet Fitness is not the equipment, the price, or even the Judgment Free Zone®. It's the cleanliness.
As someone who spends several hours each week in the gym, I pay attention to things that many people overlook. I notice whether machines are wiped down, whether trash is overflowing, and whether locker rooms are maintained.
At my local Planet Fitness, I've been impressed by the effort staff members put into keeping the facility clean. Recently, I witnessed something that reinforced that impression. While working out, I noticed a person who did not appear to be a regular Planet Fitness employee conducting what I would call a "white glove inspection."
This individual was checking various areas of the facility, looking closely at surfaces, inspecting for dust and cleanliness issues, and recording observations on a form.
That told me something important: Cleanliness wasn't being left to chance.
Someone was checking to make sure standards were being maintained.
Cleanliness Is More Than Appearance
A clean gym isn't just about looking nice.
Think about how many people touch:
Dumbbells
Barbells
Treadmill handles
Elliptical controls
Weight machines
Benches
Locker room surfaces
Every day, hundreds of people may come into contact with the same equipment.
That's why cleanliness matters. Planet Fitness encourages members to wipe down equipment before and after use and provides cleaning stations throughout its clubs.
The company emphasizes equipment sanitation as part of proper gym etiquette and hygiene.
What I've Observed
At my location, I regularly see employees:
Wiping down equipment
Cleaning mirrors
Emptying trash
Sweeping floors
Maintaining locker rooms
Checking high-touch surfaces
It's common to see staff cleaning throughout the day rather than waiting until closing time. Interestingly, former employees and members have reported that many Planet Fitness locations follow scheduled cleaning routines throughout the day, with equipment, bathrooms, and common areas being checked and cleaned regularly.
Why This Matters to Members Over 50
For younger gym-goers, cleanliness may be a nice bonus.
For those of us over 50, it can be much more important.
Many older adults are managing:
Diabetes
Heart disease
Autoimmune conditions
Recovery from illness
Joint replacements
Other health challenges
A clean environment provides peace of mind. When you know a facility takes sanitation seriously, it's one less thing to worry about while focusing on your workout.
The Standard for Modern Gyms
Fitness-industry cleaning experts recommend frequent disinfection of high-touch equipment, locker rooms, benches, bathrooms, and common areas, often using structured daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules. Professional inspections and periodic deep-cleaning are considered best practices for maintaining a safe and welcoming fitness environment. Based on what I've personally observed, my Planet Fitness appears committed to maintaining those standards.
Final Thoughts
No gym is perfect. Any facility that welcomes hundreds or even thousands of members each week faces a constant challenge in staying clean. But from my experience, Planet Fitness deserves credit. The regular cleaning, the availability of disinfectant stations, the staff attention to detail, and even the inspection process I witnessed all give me confidence that cleanliness is a priority—not an afterthought.
As a member, that's something I appreciate. Because when you're focused on improving your health, it's nice to know that the gym you're trusting with your workouts takes cleanliness seriously too. After all, a cleaner gym is not only more inviting—it's a healthier place to pursue your fitness goals.
