Respect the Workout Space: Your Gym Is Not a Coffee Shop

This morning at Planet Fitness, I was waiting for some floor space to open up in the 30-Minute Express area. One person was sitting on a mat, scrolling on her phone continuously while others waited for room to exercise. Now, let's be clear. There is nothing wrong with using your phone at the gym.  I use mine too. I may check a workout routine, change my music, respond to a quick message, or track my progress between sets. Most people do. The problem begins when we forget that the gym is a shared space.

Remember Why We're There

Every person who walks into a gym has a goal. Some are trying to lose weight. Others are fighting high blood pressure, diabetes, or recovering from injuries. Some are training for sports, while others simply want to stay healthy enough to enjoy life.

When someone occupies workout equipment or floor space while treating the area like a personal office, coffee shop, or social media lounge, it prevents others from reaching their goals.

Practice Gym Courtesy

Good gym etiquette is not complicated:

  • Use equipment for its intended purpose.

  • Rest between sets, but keep your breaks reasonable.

  • If others are waiting, be mindful of how long you occupy a space.

  • Move phone conversations outside the workout area.

  • Share equipment when possible.

  • Clean up after yourself.

  • Respect personal space.

These simple habits make the gym a better place for everyone.

The Golden Rule Applies in the Gym

One of the best principles ever taught is simple: treat others the way you would like to be treated. Imagine arriving at the gym with only 30 minutes available before work.

You have a plan and a limited amount of time. How would you feel if someone occupied the exact area you needed while scrolling through social media for 15 or 20 minutes? Probably not very happy. The next time you're tempted to turn your workout station into a mobile office, look around. Someone else may be waiting patiently for the opportunity to improve their health.

Fitness Is a Team Effort

Even though most workouts are individual activities, every gym functions as a community. We don't have to know each other's names to encourage one another. Sometimes the greatest encouragement we can offer is simply being considerate.

A little awareness goes a long way. So check your messages, change your music, and track your workout if needed. Just remember that others came to exercise too.

Let's make the gym a place where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.
